My Design Process
I consider my clients to be part of the creative team. Good design doesn't happen in a vacuum and I simply cannot do it without you. Whether you know anything about the web or not, the valuable insight you provide about your business and customers is crucial to the process.
I will require honest feedback and a firm understanding of your goals. Ideas are golden but solid objectives are what really drive successful design.
Discovery
The discovery process revolves around your business and its goals. Who is your target audience? What do you offer that your competition does not? What would you like your web site to accomplish? I will be able to bring the most value to your design project if I understand your business's values and needs, as well as your target audience’s desires and expectations.
I do not “do” design during this phase, but focus on discovering the things that will allow us to come up with the best design solution. It's helpful if you can present some other marketing materials you use in your business, such as brochures, flyers, or even examples of other websites you like. From there we can distill those elements that will provide the best direction for the project.
Design
I normally provide one or two design “comps” for my clients. A design comp is a graphic-only representation of a web page to help you get an idea of functionality and “look and feel.” During this phase there might be a lot of back and forth as we get the design locked in. Once you're satisfied that the design will meet your objectives, we'll move on to the development phase.
Development
Your site's visitors care only about their experience using your site. That is why I work to ensure I craft the highest quality markup (code) based on the latest industry standards. My markup is inherently accessible to web-enabled devices, visitors with disabilities and is search-engine friendly.
I usually spend several weeks in this phase, testing and re-testing my hand written code on several browsers, helping to assure that no matter what type of computer or browser your customers use, they will have the experience with your site that we want them to have. I'll provide you with weekly updates during this time and ultimately deliver a fully-working test site that you can test drive. I'll ask for another round of feedback at this point so that we can start preparing the project for it's release.
